CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Claire left the bar and went to the women’s restroom. It was the one place where Lombardo wouldn’t follow her. She had been in this restroom before so she knew about the window. Claire hated to do this to Lombardo but Megan was her sister and last living relative and she was in danger. There was no way Claire was going to leave her to whatever that psycho would do.

Claire understood why the Carabinieri couldn’t get a search warrant right away. But as a private person, she wasn’t under the same constraints. If she got caught inside by Scordato or the police, she would have to get embassy protection to stay out of jail. Claire wasn’t sure how that would be received by Carolyn. Still, Claire was determined to do this. If she found out where Scordato had Megan captive, she would pass it along to Romano or Ferroni. Given how slow their justice system works, maybe she wouldn’t tell them quite yet.

The latched window swung outward. Claire hoisted herself up and then checked her bandage. Seeing that the cut hadn’t opened, she swung one leg over the ledge and out, leaving her straddling it.

Right then another woman came in. Her eyes went wide when she saw Claire half in and half out of the window.

Claire held her finger to her lips, signaling the woman to be quiet.

The woman nodded understanding and stepped to the basin to wash her hands.

Claire wiggled her way clear and dropped to the ground. She knew Lombardo would ask the woman when she came out about the other woman in the restroom. She also assumed the woman would tell him she had gone out the window. Claire didn’t have much time. She ran fast as she could to the next street over and hailed the first taxi she saw.

Immediately after dinner, Megan had been re-shackled and locked in her room with two dogs for company. She stood at the barred window, on the verge of tears, with her arms wrapped around her belly. She pondered how to make her escape once she freed herself from the shackles.

From Lazzari’s last written reply, it was clear to her that he had figured out she was not Claire and she knew he would kill her. Whatever she planned, she had better do it quickly. His last written message to her, when he put the two new dogs in the room, was: The police are looking for me. Soon, they’ll be knocking on my door. So, the time has come for me to make you disappear so well that the police will look for you and never even come close to ever finding you.

The door opened and Lazzari walked in.

She backed up, holding her hands up as if to keep him away. “Please . . . no.”

All he gave her was a gruff harumph.

“Please,” she said, holding her hands together in prayer. “I’ll marry you.”

He stood there, staring at her, sucking on his lip, weighing her offer. It was what he had been wanting ever since he laid eyes on Claire.
